other marine life

In addition to our focal species of Southern Resident killer whale, Naked Whale Research has the opportunity to enhance the data sets on other rare and endangered cetaceans frequenting the NorCal coast.

Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins have been increasingly visiting the NorCal coast and bringing along their calves as well.  Notable areas to view from shore are Gualala and Westport, CA.

Whales

Grey whales are a frequent visitor along the California coast.  Rolling and feeding off the beaches some juveniles are too small to make the annual migrations and may be "over-wintering" in the near-shore areas of Mendocino.

porpoises

Along with bottlenose dolphins, harbor porpoises have been increasingly seen off the Mendocino Coast.  Groups of 10-20 individuals have been known to feed off near-shore reefs.  A question we are working to answer is-- are they part of the San Francisco Bay population?
